Walkthrough: Dungeon Level 1 (Mischief) - through Fiery Tin Sword

The Monsters are too tough… I can’t open the chests… I need a better weapon… what do I do?

This walkthrough will show you, step-by-step, how to get started on the 1st level of Ugnet’s Dungeon (‘Mischief’) and acquire the Fiery Tin Sword (the best sword available on this Dungeon level).

Make your way down from the Luskwood Tree to Ugnet’s Dungeon

If you’re starting from Liam’s Urgent Care, press ‘B’ to go to the Luskwood Tree menu, then pick ‘Grassy Meadow’, then pick ‘Ugnet’s Dungeon’ - you should wind up here (press ‘B’ to close the instruction message):

Turn right (East) and walk towards the door

You’ll see the following message… press ‘B’ to pick up the Notebook page:

Continue East and fight a Scrawny Rat

You’ll automatically open the door as you go East (it isn’t locked), but just on the other side…

An Encounter! Choose ‘Fight’ from the Combat menu and whack away with your Wooden Sword until the Scrawny Rat is defeated. If your health starts to get dangerously low during the fight, choose ‘Cast Spell’ from the Combat menu (it’s OK to waste a few health points, so Cast if you need to!). If you are defeated anyway, you’ll wake up in Liam’s Urgent Care fully healed, so just come back to this same spot and keep whacking away at that Scrawny Rat until it runs away in defeat:

Make two left turns and fight another Scrawny Rat

This place is just full of Rats! (Did you know that the word for a bunch of rats is called a ‘Mischief’? You do now).

As before, keep choosing ‘Fight’ from the Combat menu until the Scrawny Rat is defeated.

Continue West and acquire 5 lockpicks

Just keep going West and you’ll find 5 lockpicks! You don’t have to do anything to pick them up, they’ll automatically be added to your Items:

The First Chest

Turn right (face North) and go through the door (it isn’t locked). You’ll see a chest! Pick ‘Yes’ to begin the lockpick sequence:

If you have the Crank un-docked then you’re ready to start lockpicking. If you still have the Crank docked, you’ll see the following… just un-dock the Crank to get started:

Picking the Lock, Explained

(Note: for the most authentic Dungeon experience when opening a Chest, use the instructions that follow below. If you’re still having trouble picking locks, though, you can adjust Lock Difficulty in the ‘Settings’ option of the Main Menu).

The lock will open when you have the lockpick at the ‘sweet spot’ angle for that lock, held steady, with ‘Up’ held on the DPad. The trick, of course, is finding that ‘sweet spot’.

There are both visual and audio clues:

If you are not in the sweet spot when you tap the DPad in the ‘Up’ direction, there will be a visual clue: the pick and the keyhole with both give a small wiggle, and an audio cue: there will be a double-clicking noise.

If you are close to the sweet spot when you tap the DPad in the ‘Up’ direction, the pick and the keyhole will both give a small wiggle, and the keyhole will move a bit further before it stops - and there will be a single-clicking noise.

The closer you have the lockpick to the sweet spot when you press ‘Up’ on the DPad the further the keyhole will move before the lockpick wiggles and the single-click happens.

Once you are in the sweet spot for that particular lock, pressing and holding ‘Up’ on the DPad will rotate the keyhole a full 90 degrees clockwise and the lock will click open.

How to do it, step by step:

Put the lockpick at the completely upright (12-o’clock) position, then give the DPad the barest tap in the ‘Up’ direction. If you’re not in the sweet spot, move the lockpick a few degrees clockwise and try again… you’ll either hear the double-click (in which case move the pick another few degrees clockwise) or the single-click (in which case you’re getting closer, move just a little more clockwise) and try ‘Up’ on the DPad again.

Repeat the steps above until you either find the sweet spot or you have the lockpick at the 3-o’clock position… if you get that far without hitting the sweet spot, go back to the 12-o’clock position and repeat the steps, this time moving a few degrees counter-clockwise each time until you get close to or actually find the sweet spot.

If during the steps the lockpick breaks, there will still be a stub of the old pick (don’t move it, leave it where it is) and a new one will pop up in the same location, just continue the steps from where you left off.

You’ll know you’ve found the sweet spot when pressing the DPad ‘Up’ button moves the keyhole to point its bottom all the way to the left… and you’ll hear that sweet ‘klunk’ sound of the lock being opened!

That’s a lot of words… let’s show how it’s done… here some links to video:

Note:

The sweet spot for a given chest will reset if you leave it and come back again.

As chests become more difficult, the sweet spot will become narrower.

Loot the Chest

Once you’ve opened the chest you’ll see the following:

Looting the chest is automatic, you’ll see the names of the various loot items appear as you move them from the chest to your Items.

In this chest you will find:

A Potion of Minor Mana
A Mana Rune
A Ginger Root
A Potion of Minor Health
A Tin Ingot

That last one is a great find! Because now it’s time to:

Buy a Tin Sword from eltee

Make your way back to the stairs, choose ‘Yes’ to take them back up:

You’ll wind up back in the Grassy Meadow… from there, go up to the Luskwood Tree and from there to eltee’s Armory and choose the ‘Buy’ menu option:

At the next menu (‘Category’) choose ‘Swords’:

You could try to buy the Fiery Tin Sword at this point, but eltee would inform you that you’d also need a Fire Gem. Since you don’t have one, pick the ‘Tin Sword’ to buy it instead:

When you buy the Tin Sword, you’ll automatically Equip it!

This is going to do up to twice the damage as your Wooden sword used to.

At this point it’s a good idea to visit Liam’s Urgent Care for some quick Healing, if you need it:

Now it’s time to head back down to Ugnet’s Dungeon. This time from the stairs take one step North, then press ‘B’ once you’ve read the message:

Take a left turn, and head West… there’s another Scrawny Rat! After defeating it, you’ll see:

Take another left turn (facing South) and then a right turn (facing West again)… there will be yet another Scrawny Rat, defeat it, then keep on heading West… just before the end of the corridor, there will be yet another Scrawny Rat, defeat that one too:

If you haven’t already, you should probably top off your Health by going to Camp (‘B’ button) and drinking a Health Potion and/or Casting a Heal Spell.

Take a right turn and head North… you’ll see a door. Just before the door you’ll encounter the Scrawny Rat’s bigger, meaner brother: a Vicious Rat! Defeat it, then open the door (it isn’t locked).

Just inside the door you’ll find another chest. Pick the lock!

This chest contains:

A Health Rune
A Minor Health Potion
A Minor Mana Potion
A Tin Shield
A Scroll of Minor Fire

You’ll hear a fwoomp sound when you loot the Tin Shield… because you didn’t already have a Shield equipped you Equipped the Tin Shield automatically… and your Armor Points jumped up from zero to 20!

We’re now ready to go back and get that Fiery Tin Sword. You might ask, “How, we still don’t have a Fire Gem?” - but you did just acquire a Scroll of Minor Fire. Let’s head back out of the Dungeon, through the Grassy Meadow and up to the Luskwood Tree to visit Michi’s Laboratory:

Choose Michi’s ‘Sell’ menu:

Sell Michi the Scroll of Minor Fire, she’ll break it down and give you its component parts… a Crude Vellum and (yes!) a Fire Gem:

Head over to eltee’s Armory and choose the ‘Sell’ menu there:

“Sell’ your Tin Sword, and eltee will give you back a Tin Ingot:

Now you have all the components you need! Go to eltee’s ‘Buy’ menu and buy a Fiery Tin Sword!

That Fiery Tin Sword does the same damage as the ordinary Tin Sword, plus FIRE DAMAGE! And… it does look good on you. Now go forth, and do battle!
